Red bush tea, known as rooibos, only grows in the Cederberg mountains in South Africa. The Rooibos Heritage route runs between Wuppertal and Nieuwoudtville through old villages and rooibos farms. We trailered the bikes up to Clan William from Cape Town and spent three days exploring the route.
The Wild Coast, the home of Nelson Mandela and once known as the Kingdom of Transkei, is a vast stretch of rolling green hills dotted with colourful rondavels and farming communities that drop steeply into the Indian Ocean. During our journey from Durban to Cape Town we spent a week riding through this stunning part of South Africa.
After days winding through the Lesotho mountains we reached the small village of Semonkong in the south west of the country. From here we left our bikes for horses to explore the Thaba Putsoa Mountains.
This is the second part of our journey across Lesotho. Part 1 is here.
After sending the motorbikes ahead of us to Bloemfontein by truck, we flew into the city a few days later to meet them. From there we made our way through the Drakensberg and into Lesotho via the Sani Pass. With August being the end of winter, we contended with freezing nights but lucked out with blue skies daily. Our route took us across the width of the country along winding mountain roads to Semonkong before making the journey back to Cape Town.
